In our new home up North, the dark and cold months seem to last forever. The snow has fallen intermittently since November, and January felt like it stretched for 187 days. Now, as February draws to a close, I’m truly ready for spring to arrive. Yet in our garden, perched high in the hills, I must wait a little while longer.

Hoping to find the first signs of spring, I spent a morning in the gardens of Castle Fraser. Their gardens, much older than mine and more sheltered, seemed a promising place to spot snowdrops — which I found in abundance. While wandering through the gardens, I discovered tiny buds on bare branches and nestled between old leaves — some so small they escaped my camera’s focus. It was enough to give me some relief from the gloom of this endless winter.
