At the risk of sounding a bit like a snob – which occasionally happens: the Northern Lights were not on my list of things I wanted to experience in life. Sure, if I would ever be in the right place at the right time, I would go look at them. But I wasn’t making an effort to visit any of these places. Moreover, I had heard from quite a few people that the Aurora isn’t as spectacular in real life as it appears in photographs. Something about your eyes not being able to see that specific colour of green.

Not that long ago, I learned that the Aurora is not just green, it can appear also in pink, dark red, blue, purple and yellow. With pink being one of my favourite colours, I started a secret mission to find out where I could see a pink Aurora. Turns out: from my backyard.

Never in my wildest dreams had I imagined seeing the Northern Lights so close to home, but last week it happened. My street has too many lanterns, so I put a coat over my pyjamas – which seems to become a bit of a habit – and drove two minutes into the hills to get a better look. And there it was: a starry sky painted pink and purple with hints of red, yellow and green. Just as bright and vibrant as in my photos. To be honest: it was one of the best experiences of my life. So if you ever get the chance, go look for them.
